Liquorice root (Latin: Glycyrrhiza glabara) is known colloquially around the world by various names including Grandfather Herb, The Great Harmonizer and Sweetwood. Although it sounds like these names were developed by hippies who may have enjoyed a herb of another variety, there are good sound reasons for their development!
Well start with Grandfather Herb. The first recorded use of liquorice root can be found in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. The Egyptians believed that in the same way that a grandfather cares for his grandchildren, liquorice root eased coughs and other lung related ailments - hence the name. The Egyptians were so fond of the root that when Tutankhamen was entombed, fresh liquorice root was placed near his sarcophagus in the great pyramid at Giza.
From Egypt to China, and the Great Harmonizer. Traditional Chinese medicine held that a powder made by crushing dried liquorice had the power to treat the spleen, liver and kidneys. Ancient practitioners believed that healthy internal organs fostered spiritual and mental harmony, a belief that again resulted in the colloquial name.
From China then to Woodstock and the final name, Sweetwood. Okay, we made up the Woodstock part - but all the information we came across did indicate that this name was probably developed by hippies. This one is pretty straightforward - liquorice is a sweetly flavoured herb. The sweetness is due to the fact that the root contains up to 14% naturally occurring sugars.
Whichever name you decide to go with, were quite sure that youll find that a nice hot cup of brewed liquorice will put a smile on your face. Do yourself a favour and try some today.
Some people enjoy this tea with a little milk or coconut milk, or really dial up the sweetness with a bit of honey.
Try brewing the mix for a second time and perhaps add a little mint or ginger, slightly more sophisticated for the adults.
Add a fiery kick with a big scoop of ginger before brewing.
For a unique twist, try blending Liquorice Root with other herbal, black, or green teas, the results are fantastic! Liquorice root adds a delicious sweetness wherever it's used, so blends well with many teas. Try adding a touch to some of our other flavoured black teas to really sweeten them up. Two of my favourites are: Blackberry Vanilla & Liquorice, Pumpkin Spice Chai. Just add a half teaspoon of liquorice root per cup.
Also delicious iced and cold-brewed.
Iced Tea
Make as for hot, but add extra tea - double the amount of tea per cup is recommended.
When the tea has cooled a little, pour over ice and then serve.
Cold Brew
For a smoother taste experience.
Place the tea in a jug and add cold water.
Leave to infuse for a few hours (or overnight in the fridge)
Strain and enjoy.
